A long string of international entrepreneurs and start-ups, many of them from Italy, have come to Silicon Valley to raise funds and grow their business. Their track record is mixed, and it is unclear how successful this model has been for Italian start-ups.
BAIA is organizing a panel discussion to address the reasons of this mixed success and debate what else could be done to promote the success of Italy-born start ups. Specifically:
- Why has “transplanting start-ups” been somewhat unsuccessful, at least so far?
- Is it an “Italian” problem? Has it worked for start-ups transplanted from other countries?
- Vivek Wadhwa, one of the panelists, recently described an innovative model adopted by Chile to keep and attract start-ups: could such a model work in Italy too? Or are there too many structural issues?
PANELISTS
A panel of scholars and entrepreneurs will bring different perspectives to the fore. The panel-style discussion - moderated by Massimo Arrigoni, a BAIA board member “transplanted” from Italy in the nineties, and CEO of Earl Impact, Inc., a California-based software company - will feature the following speakers:
- Vivek Wadhwa: Vivek is a Visiting Scholar at UC-Berkeley, Senior Research Associate at Harvard Law School, and Director of Research at the Center for Entrepreneurship and Research Commercialization at Duke University. He has written extensively about start-ups, their role in the overall economy, and the keys to a start-up’s success.
- Fabrizio Capobianco: Fabrizio is CEO of Funanbol, developer of open source mobile cloud sync software for phones and connected devices. As Funanbol is a “partially transplanted” start-up, Fabrizio will bring a unique perspective - and substantial experience - to the discussion.
- Aldo Cocchiglia: Aldo is CEO of M31USA and General Manager of M31, an Italian incubator of technology start-ups that recently opened an office in Silicon Valley.
- Augusto Marietti: Augusto is the founder and CEO of Mashape, a young startup that Augusto started in a garage in Milan and that has now landed in San Francisco, after raising some angel funding in Silicon Valley.
- Marco Marinucci: Marco is a manager at Google and the founder of the Mind The Bridge Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes bringing Italian startups to the Silicon Valley through its annual business plan competition and its year round Gym program.
